Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances PFAS - A growing concern
What are PFAS?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances PFAS or PFASs are a group of synthetic organofluorine chemical compounds that have multiple fluorine atoms attached. PFAS are a large class of thousands of synthetic chemicals that are used throughout society. They are used in a wide range of products, including non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, food packaging, and fire-fighting foam. PFASs are also used in industrial processes, such as metal plating and semiconductor manufacturing.
Health risks of PFAS
PFASs have been linked to a number of health risks, including cancer, birth defects, and immune system problems. They can also accumulate in the body over time, leading to long-term health problems. PFASs have been found in the blood of people all over the world, including in the United States, Europe, and Asia. The health risks of PFASs are still being studied, but it is clear that these chemicals are a cause of concern.
