Former lead singer reveals his reasons for leaving the band at the height of their success

By Dan Rather

In an exclusive interview with Dan Rather, former Journey lead singer Steve Perry opened up about why he walked away from the spotlight at the height of his career.

Perry, who fronted Journey from 1977 to 1998, said that he left the band due to a combination of factors, including health problems, creative differences, and a desire to spend more time with his family.

"I was burned out," Perry said. "I had been touring for years, and I was just tired. I needed to take a break from the music business."

Perry also said that he was unhappy with the direction that Journey was taking musically.

"I felt like we were starting to lose our identity," he said. "We were becoming more and more like a pop band, and I didn't want to be a part of that."

Perry's departure from Journey was a major blow to the band, but they eventually recovered and continued to release successful albums and tour extensively.

Perry, meanwhile, went on to pursue a solo career and released several successful albums.

In recent years, Perry has returned to music, and he has performed with Journey on several occasions.

"I'm glad to be back," Perry said. "I love music, and I love performing. I'm just grateful that I have the opportunity to do it again."
